Join us for three immersion workshops to help you become the urban farmer of your dreams! This three-part educational series will cover a wide range of subjects that will help you get growing successfully. Whether you are a home grower looking to grow healthy, organic food for your family or a budding market grower, this course offers all the information you need to get started.  This course will be taught by owner and founder of San Diego Seed Company and the San Diego Seed Company farm. Brijette’s hands-on experience of growing in San Diego County for 10 years will help you become an expert grower. Save time and money by learning from the mistakes we have made on our farm. Enjoy long term success as a grower having the support of experts in the community. All students enjoy access to a private facebook group for students of the class where they can access additional reading materials, private events, special discounts,  information for growing in San Diego and more!

Course costs include:

Workshop Details:

Part One: Understanding Seeds Saturday, October 12th

10:00am-12:00 Lecture

Participants can expect to learn a wide range of information about seeds which are the most important part of our agricultural system. Topics covered are:

  • Understanding seed types
  • How seed plays a vital role in sustainability
  • Seed industry history
  • What you need to know about the worldwide seed situation
  • Starting your plants from seeds
  • Greenhouse creation and  management
  • Plant propagation from cutting

12:00- 1:00pm Potluck

1:00-3:00 pm On-farm workshops

Students will get their hand dirty on applicable farm activities. They include but are not limited to:

  • Seed starting- get your seeds started for the season, with expert help
  • Tour of the greenhouse, understand how to create your own
  • Crop thinning
  • And more!

Part Two: Vegetable Production on an Urban Farm Saturday, October 19th

10:00am- 12:00 Lecture

Participants can expect to learn about each step of how to create an urban farm. Topics covered are:

  • Soil building and Soil testing
  • Challenges and solutions for an urban grower
  • Soil food web
  • Irrigation basics
  • Specific tips on growing warm season plants
  • Perennialization

12:00- 1:00pm Potluck

1:00-3:00 pm On-farm workshops

Hands-on activity includes

  • Compost shifting and soil making
  • Transplanting seasonable plants – Learn the tips and tricks to successfully transplant your veggies starts in your garden or farm.

Part Three: Seed Saving and on Farm Breeding Saturday, October 26th

10:00 am-12:00 Lecture

Participants will get to delve into the important details about seed saving, breeding, and on-farm seed selection. Topics to be covered are:

  • Getting your plants to produce seeds
  • Basic plant sexual reproduction
  • Pollination/ Cross-pollination
  • Seed saving basics
  • Selection, de-hybridizing and variety maintenance
  • Seed processing and storage
  • How seed saving can change the world
  • EXPERT GUEST SPEAKER: Integrated Pest Management

12:00- 1:00pm Potluck

1:00-3:00 pm On-farm workshops

Participants will enjoy these fun activities on the farm

  • Identify real garden pest and how to treat them
  • On-farm seed swap with farmers, gardeners and seed savers from the community. Get rare and interesting varieties!
  • Seeds saving activity with tomatoes and other crops

    The workshops with Brijette have been so useful to me as a beginner level gardener. It can be really overwhelming getting started, but she breaks it down so that you can easily digest it and then directly apply it to your garden at home.
