Vicia faba

This broad bean is an incredible plant with the capability to fix up to 200 pounds of nitrogen per acre into the soil.  For that reason, this bean is used as a valuable cover crop and green manure. Culinary this bean is used in stir-fries, tossed in pasta and made into dips. The possibilities are endless! Unlike most bean varieties, this bean prefers the cooler season of the year.  Bees love the flowers too!

Suggested Planting Requirements:  Legumes like well-drained soil rich in organic matter and a moderate amount of nutrients. For Fava beans, they can thrive in moderate to poor soil. They prefer a cool or mild climate for summer cultivation. Water lightly at planting, medium at flowering and heavily throughout harvest time.  Soak beans for 24 hours before planting for expedited germination.

Growing Recommendations:  Start indoors for short-season growth, or seed directly once soils have reached at least 65°F, preferably after the last frost.  Make small, successive plantings every 20-25 days for a continuous harvest.   Avoid overhead watering to reduce mildew. If planting as a cover crop you can plant is as densely as needed. For consumption space 6” to 1’
