Bean, Contender Bush
Bean –Contender – Bush
This tender bean is highly productive, stingless, and tastes best fresh from the garden. They can also be frozen or canned. An early variety, Contender beans grow on medium-sized plants with 6″-8″ pods. This variety is tolerant of hot weather and mildew. Legumes fix the soil with Nitrogen so plant tomatoes where you planted your beans the prior season for high-yield fruit.
Suggested Planting Requirements: Legumes like well-drained soil rich in organic matter and a moderate amount of nutrients. Water lightly at planting, medium at flowering, and heavily throughout harvest time. Soak beans for 24 hours before planting for expedited germination.
Growing Recommendations: Start indoors for short-season growth, or seed directly once soils have reached at least 65°F, preferably after the last frost. Make small, successive plantings every 20-25 days for a continuous harvest. Avoid overhead watering to reduce mildew.
Harvesting & Storage: Bush beans will produce all of their fruit over a few weeks’ time. For best flavor, harvest the pods before they reach 1″ in diameter regardless of their length.
