Description

 Cantaloupe – Golden Delicious

Cucumis melo

This vine produces early in the season with small fruits that reach 2-3 pounds.  The deep orange flesh is sweet and fragrant.  This particular variety is resistant to fusarium wilt.

Suggested Planting Requirements:   Full sun is needed and high heat toward the end of the growing season can produce very sweet fruit.  Ph level for melons should be 6.0-7.0 with soil that is fertile and well drained.  Melons tend to be shallow rooted, so watering often and consistent is important.  Plants can be potted and/or trellised and/or left to sprawl on the ground.

Growing Recommendations:  Melons must be sheltered from cool winds and placed in the warmest area. The heat of ideally 90 degrees will condense the sugars.

Harvesting & Storage:   Melons should be harvested at peak ripeness.  The bottom of the melon that is not attached to the vine should omit a musky sweet smell when ready to harvest.  They should be cut from the vine and handled very carefully.
