Pea - Mammoth Melting (Snow Pea) Pisum Sativum Mammoth Melting peas are the best! Plants produce prolific sweet and tender 5 inch pods. Appropriate for CSA and commercial farms and backyard gardening. Pods are uniform and tender, and the plant is resistant to wilt. Like all peas, they should be grown in the cool season and up a trellis or support system. Plant in fall or early spring in Southern California and warm climates. Recommended Planting Requirements: Loose well-drained soil is the best for peas. Since peas are part of the Fabaceae family they can fix their own nitrogen. Therefore, they do not need a lot of fertilization. Organic matter can be added for a healthier harvest. Tatsoi, Black Knight ORGANIC

Tatsoi - Black Knight Brassica rapa narinosa A dark green tatsoi that is finely flavored. Black Knight is spoon-shaped, thick, and compact. Like all tatsoi, it has a high vitamin content. If you don't know the joys of growing tatsoi in your garden, you are missing out! This fuss-free plant produces copious amounts of spoon-shaped greens that are essential to many Asian recipes. Every year we grow tatsoi in the cool season and have more than we can use. Tatsoi is an ancient vegetable with spoon-shaped leaves. Very decorative in the way it grows and also delicious. Leaves can be individually harvested for a prolonged harvest. For southern California growers in milder climates, the growing period can be almost 10 months out of the year. We trialed these Tokyo onions on our farm during the fall/winter of 2018 and were wonderfully surprised! They grew quickly to a stunning size of 2"-3" in diameter. Great mild flavor. The bunching onion is one of the most important types of onions in Asia and has been grown in China for thousands of years. A versatile and mild flavor makes it a great accompaniment to any dish. You can grow them in a pot or on a balcony. They do really well when interplanted with other cool-season crops like cabbages or broccoli. We keep ours in the ground until we use the last of them in mid-summer after our salsa season! Suggested Planting Requirements: Starting seed inside is recommended to reduce competition with weeds. Onion seeds are notoriously slow-growing, so be patient! You may also direct sow. Onion seeds have the shortest viability of all common vegetables so make sure your seeds are fresh. There are several different types of onions. Bulbing onions produce a large bulb and can store for some time. Spring onions or bunching onions are typically sown in the fall and harvested as "spring" onions or scallions in the early springtime. Growing recommendations will vary slightly depending on what kind of onion you wish to grow. Growing Recommendations for bunching or spring onions: Plant spring onion seeds in the fall to ensure production by early spring. Eggplant, Black Beauty ORGANIC

After years of trialing eggplant varieties, we fell in love with this ageless heirloom. We love it for its production, consistently sized fruit, and the ability to create huge canopies that shade out weeds. During the 2017-2018 season, we produced seed for this garden staple on our organic farm and are now excited to offer regionally adapted black beauty seeds. This variety is great for slicing large pieces of eggplant that can be fried or baked for classic dishes like eggplant parmesan. Suggested Planting Requirements: All plants love to grow in fertile, well-drained soils. Eggplants will tolerate less than desirable soil but can benefit from the addition of organic fertilizer and compost if your soil is less than the best. Squash, Spaghetti ORGANIC

This squash is a staple on our farm and allows us to make delicious and healthy "pasta" meals from its pasta-like insides. You simply cook the squash and then scoop out the middle for a pasta alternative that will make even the pickiest of eaters happy. It's a great break away from traditional squash. Keeps in the kitchen for weeks and the fridge for up to several months. This vining squash can grow quite vigorously. Best if planted in an area where it can take up lots of room. Alternatively, it can be grown over trellising to maximize space in small gardens. Resistant to powdery mildew. Suggested Planting Requirements: Squash seeds can easily be started indoors or out. Plant outdoors when temperatures are above 50 degrees at night. For coastal areas, it's best to wait until cool wet spring weather has passed and days are warm and sunny. For those in inland areas where you freeze or get cold winters, you can use plastic mulches to warm the soil. If planting inside or in a greenhouse, plant one seed per cell to avoid unnecessary waste in thinning. If you are planting directly in the ground sow groups of 2 to 3 seeds 1 inch deep and 2 feet apart. When seedlings have 4 leaves, thin to one strong seedling per group. Or, plant in slightly mounded hills, 2 feet in diameter. Adding a small amount of organic fertilizer to each mound is recommended for the best growth. Growing Recommendations: Squash needs deep mounds of organic matter, rich soil, and heavy, consistent watering. All squash are extremely frost sensitive, so use plastic mulches to heat soils in early spring and row covers to protect from frost at both ends of the growing cycle, especially in short summer growing seasons. Avoid overhead watering to prevent powdery mildew. Any squash can be planted in 20” container if space is limited. If birds are a nuisance in your garden, place row covers over your squash plants. Be sure to give your squash adequate space to grow, it will allow for more productive plants. Harvesting & Storage: Spaghetti squash should be harvested when they are fully yellow and hard. The meat inside will be tender and delicious. Pumpkin, Rainbow Mix ORGANIC

A custom mix of organic pumpkin varieties that gives you all the colors and shapes of the rainbow. This is a great mix to grow for decorative fall decor. Kids will love the colors and shapes of these pumpkins. Suggested Planting Requirements: Pumpkins can be easily started from seeds indoors or directly planted. If starting indoors, plant one seed per cell to avoid unnecessary waste from thinning. If you are planting directly in the ground, you can plant 2-3 seeds per mound and thin to the strongest one. Pumpkins grow best in soils above 50 degrees. Use plastic mulches to warm soil if needed. Pumpkins prefer loam or sandy soil high in organic matter to hold large amounts of moisture. Plants require heavy and consistent watering for the best development. Preferred soil pH is between 6.0 and 7.0. Growing Recommendations: Allow proper spacing of pumpkins for disease control and good fruit development. The vines can sprawl for several feet. If you are a container grower, allow for the vine to grow out of the container and into an area that is not a walkway. Do not overhead water as this can cause mildew and mold issues. To prevent rotting of individual fruits, place a board or piece of plastic under each fruit. As with most cucurbits, mounding provides an optimal growing area. Harvesting & Storage: For immediate use harvest when the skin loses its sheen. Cut the fruit from the vine, leaving 4"-6" of the stem. Cure for storage by setting in a warm, dry location for 1-2 weeks. Can be stored for several months. Pumpkin meat can be cooked and processed to your liking then frozen if needed. Tropical Milkweed, Bloodflower

Tropical milkweed, sometimes called bloodflower, is an eye-catching plant that produces bright flowers of red, orange, and yellow. This plant provides a valuable source of nutrition for monarch butterflies and their caterpillars. Plant bloodflower in your garden and you are sure to see the amazing yellow and black striped caterpillars (larvae) that are the first stages of the monarch butterfly. Monarchs will lay eggs on the milkweed plant in March and April. Once the eggs hatch the caterpillars will consume huge portions of the plant as they prepare to turn into the monarch butterfly. Tropical milkweed is the cousin of the butterfly weed and will easily reseed in mild winter areas. This plant is very drought tolerant and an essential for butterfly gardens. Four O'Clock Color Blast

Four O'Clocks are named for their trumpet-shaped flowers that open in the late afternoon. An extremely easy plant to grow, the blooms on one plant range from purple to yellow and every color in between. Delightfully fragrant flowers are drought tolerant and can reseed and become perennials in mild winter areas. The busy plant can be grown against walls or in the back of flower gardens. Where to grow: Seeds can be direct sown or transplanted in the spring. Four O'Clocks transplant very well. Plant directly in the ground when the soil is at least 65 degrees. Corn, Sweet Top Hat ORGANIC

This open-pollinated corn came from an Oregon farmer/breeder/seed grower Jonathan Spero of Lupine Knoll Farm. He spent six years diligently selecting open-pollinated sweet corn that has all the sweetness we love! This corn is great for the gardener and small scale grower. It has good kernel development, great texture, and sweet corn flavor. The Organic Seed Alliance, which has been very helpful for our farm, spearheaded the work behind this great open-pollinated corn variety. Suggested Planting Requirements: Corn is a vigorous and fast-growing crop. For the best production, you will want to give it generous amounts of nitrogen phosphorus and potassium. You can do this by adding an all-purpose organic granular fertilizer at the time of planting. We also recommend adding compost or aged manure to the top 6" of the soil. Corn needs full sun and warm weather to grow. For pollination purposes, you will want to plant corn in a block to ensure the pollen falls onto the tassels. Growing Recommendations: Corn is typically directly sown in the ground, and in protected gardens, this works well. If you have critters in your garden or issues with direct sowing you can transplant your corn seed as we do on our farm. The secret is to make sure you do not let the corn become root bound in the pots. When transplanting the corn, make sure you untwist the main root so that it dangles free at planting. This ensures they are not rooted bound and the transplants can grow freely. Harvesting & Storage: Depending on the variety of corn, the harvest instructions will vary. Sweet corn is harvested when the peak sugar has condensed in each kernel. This is typically about 17-25 days after pollination. Signs of maturity are: silks become dry, ears are tilted from the stem, and ears feel firm. When in doubt, peel back the husk and squeeze a kernel. If a milk juice comes out, it's ready! Do not let sweet corn over ripen. Popcorn varieties are ready when the kernels are fully developed in the husk and hard to the touch. For dent and flint corn varieties, if the silk near the very tip of the ear of corn is dry, then the corn is likely to mature. To store sweet corn, harvest whole ears and store in the fridge until ready for eating. Popcorn and flint corns can be stored dry until needed. Pepper, Thai Chili Mix ORGANIC

If you love the flavor of Thai chilies, you will love this custom mix! We grew these seeds on our farm for trialing and production in the summer of 2019. We could not believe the number of chilies each plant produced! The plants form small bushes that produce over a pound of chilies on each one! You will find red and orange Thai chilies in this mix. Both have a decent amount of heat but the flavor is what is wonderful. Floral and sweet notes complement the heat and will add flavor to your dishes! Suggested Planting Requirements: Peppers require deeply worked, well-drained soil with plenty of added organic matter and a pH of 6.0-6.8. Do not overwater as this encourages diseases. Growing Recommendations: Start seeds indoors 8 weeks before the last frost. Direct sowing is not recommended but can be accomplished. Mulch for disease and weed control. Pinch all flowers until the main stalk reaches 18” for optimum support. In cooler areas, you may grow peppers in greenhouses or under cloches. Temperatures under 55°F may permanently damage peppers. Peppers can be grown in container gardens. Stake to keep fruit off the ground. Harvesting & Storage: Harvest the first fruits early to encourage continued production through the season. This regionally adapted and locally grown variety of sweet peas came to us from a seed saver in the Point Loma neighborhood of San Diego. She has been growing these stunning sweet peas since 1993 and shared them with us! Point Loma Pops have gorgeous deep, dark purple flowers full of fragrance, and are resistant to powdery mildew. Grown on a trellis or left to grow wild in the garden, they will happily reseed and bring about years of beautiful blooms. Ethiopian Kale ORGANIC

This dark leafy green outcompetes kales in every way! Ethiopian Kale is tastier, less prone to insect damage, and grows great in Southern California and beyond. It's actually a type of mustard green, but do not let that fool you. The flavor is superb! It's mild and tender making it great for salads, sauteing, soups, just about anything. We were gifted this variety from our great friends over at Redwood Seeds. What a gift it turned out to be. We love this plant! It actually has less oxalic acid than spinach and has almost none of the "bitter" flavor that causes growers to not like kale and similar greens. It's super easy to grow and thrives in the warm winters of southern California Recommended growing requirements: Although many greens can be grown year-round in mild climates, it’s best tasting in cooler seasons. If you plan to keep kale for multiple seasons make sure to amend the soil with plenty of organic matter and give it plenty of space. Feed the Monarchs! Narrow-leaf milkweed, sometimes called Mexican whorled milkweed, is a California native flower that is a preferred food source for monarch butterflies. This flowering perennial blooms in clusters of lavender tinted flowers. Monarchs eat this plant and lay eggs on it—making it an ideal plant to put in your butterfly garden. This subshrub grows about 2-4' tall. As with all milkweeds, the seed pods will swell and burst with seeds attached to silky hairs. Those who want to support the monarch population can plant this flower throughout their property to ensure a robust food supply for these beautiful creatures! Seed Starting Method: Narrow-leaf milkweed seed has about 25% of its seeds protected by the need for cold to break dormancy. This means that growers in mild climates might notice a lower seed germination rate. Direct seeding or transplanting are both acceptable ways to start the seed. Bean, Bush Roc D'or ORGANIC

Roc D'or bush bean is a French variety that produces loads and loads of the tastiest beans! Buttery and slightly sweet with beautiful yellow pods that are long and rounded. This variety of bean surpasses other wax beans in production and uniformity. Great for the home gardener or market grower. Suggested Planting Requirements: Legumes like a well-drained soil rich in organic matter and a moderate amount of nutrients. Plants should be watered lightly at the time of planting, medium at flowering, and heavily throughout harvest time. Despite the warning against transplanting your beans, on our farm we almost always start our seeds in the greenhouse and plant them out. This allows for perfect spacing on our small farm. Depending on your preference you may start indoors for short-season growing, or seed directly once soils have reached at least 48°F, after the last frost. If you plant too soon in cold soil, your seeds will likely rot. Soak beans for 24 hours before planting for expedited germination. Growing Recommendations: Avoid overhead watering to prevent diseases. The more you pick, the more beans the plant will produce. Checking the plant every few days is a good practice. Space the plants 6- 8" to provide ample airflow and prevent fungal issues. For bush bean varieties, succession planting every 2 weeks will ensure a constant supply of beans for the summer months.
