Phaseolus vulgaris

Suggested Planting Requirements: Legumes like well-drained soil rich in organic matter and a moderate amount of nutrients. Plants should be watered lightly at the time of planting, medium at flowering and heavily throughout harvest time.   You may start indoors for short-season growing, or seed directly once soils have reached at least 65F, after the last frost.  Soak beans for 24 hours before planting for expedited germination.

Growing Recommendations: To ensure bountiful harvest make successive plantings every 10 days for a continuous harvest. Avoid overhead watering to prevent diseases. Bush varieties can be grown 4″- 6″ apart while pole varieties should be grown on some type of structure.

Harvesting & Storage: Pick regularly to extend the harvest period. When you have enough beans harvested you can let the remaining beans mature and dry them on the vine to use as shell beans. Fresh pole beans freeze well.
