Bean, Bush Viva San Diego ORGANIC

Bean – Viva San Diego - Bush Phaseolus vulgaris This bean comes with a very local story! Our dear friend over at Rio Del Rey Beans gave us a highly prolific bean called "Viva" in hopes of us utilizing its great qualities to produce a bean that does really well in our region. The Viva bean had been a breeding project of bean breeders at the University of California Davis campus. We were delighted that he would share such a stunning bean with us! After taking it home to our certified organic farm and producing seeds we were in for a HUGE surprise! The all-black seeds that he gave us yielded a kaleidoscope of flavors, colors, and textures. Instead of being disappointed at the pollination mishaps we fell in love with the bean and did further field tests. After trialing them over and over we got feedback from our growers and gardeners and they all said the same thing! We LOVE IT! So, here it is for you to enjoy too! We love to cook it with herbs from the garden to make tasty bean soup. Suggested Planting Requirements: Legumes like a well-drained soil rich in organic matter and a moderate amount of nutrients. Plants should be watered lightly at the time of planting, medium at flowering and heavily throughout harvest time. Despite the warning against transplanting your beans, on our farm we almost always start our seeds in the greenhouse and plant them out. This allows for perfect spacing on our small farm. Depending on your preference you may start indoors for short-season growing, or seed directly once soils have reached at least 48F, after the last frost. Broccoli, Waltham 29 ORGANIC

Broccoli-Waltham 29 Brassica oleracea This sturdy variety is grown for is side shoots and large heads that form on easy to harvest stocks. Heads can reach 6-7" in size and continue to produce side shoots after the main head is harvested. This broccoli is widely adapted, drought tolerant and a great selection to grow for a fall crop. The side shoots will produce for 7-8 weeks after the main head is harvested and growers can enjoy the good freezing quailies of this broccoli. Waltham 29 broccoli was named for Waltham, MA where it was developed in the 1950s. Recommended planting requirements: Like cabbages, the best tasting broccoli is those that grow very quickly. To ensure this add plenty of organic matter to well-worked soil. Broccoli is more sensitive to warm weather than cabbage and should be protected with shade cloth in areas that have high temperatures in the fall like zones 9 and 10. Growing recommendations: Broccoli is a cool-season crop that is best planted with plenty of time to mature. Regular watering and additions of fertilizer can drastically improve your harvest. For fall crops start seed 10-12 weeks before the first hard freeze date or desired harvest time. Transplant into the ground during cool temperatures like the morning or evening. Cabbage, Red Acre ORGANIC

Brassica oleracea This purple, highly nutritious cabbage has a ball-shaped head that weighs 4 to 5 pounds. Many love this variety for delicious sauerkraut, or as an alternative to Napa cabbage in Kimchi. Suggested Planting Requirements: Cabbages need very rich soil to be strong producers. Amending soil organically before planting is recommended. When growing cabbage in particularly cold areas, grow in your warmest spot in the garden. For San Diego growers simply grow in full sun. Cabbage is hardy enough to direct sow. Growing recommendation: cabbages can be grown in fall or spring if the conditions meet the growing temperatures. Basic Fruit Tree Care Workshop

Join us for a morning class to teach you the basics of fruit tree care. The class will include how to irrigate, fertilize, plant, prune and harvest fruit from your trees. This class will take place in the certified organic orchard of San Diego Seed Company. Participants will get to learn first hand how to prune, different watering systems and more.
